Well, I’m back… In the country and in town. And not that I wouldn’t appreciate our average scalding summer just as much the next guy, but I was pretty quick to run to the hills (literally and figuratively) this past weekend and go hiking, tenting, and getting sunburnt to a crisp, through the Parang mountains. This may just be my heat-induced rotten streak, but there’s nothing quite like enjoying a cool alpine breeze while knowing the rest of the poor bastards, a.k.a beloved friends and family, are roasting in the asphalt jungle. Bonus points if you can do so while gnawing on gummi bears at over 2500 m altitude.

Returning to our little photographic endeavors, there’s still plenty of photos to share from the land of baguettes and snooty people with weird accents, but I thought I’d celebrate my coming home with a more local shot. So here’s pretty much what I saw this Monday morning, crawling out of my tent at 7AM…

In other (sadder) news, after a long and fruitful service above and beyond the call of duty, I have finally decided to retire my (now former) hiking shoes. They shall be missed. Hopefully, though, they’ll go out with a smile…

Top o’ the mornin’ ta ye, nice folks! And what a lovely morning it is, after all that pesky rain we’ve been having lately. Moving on, today’s photo-of-the-week is another sunset shot from the top of Kotor…

As for the charming young man channeling Angus, this would be my friend George, better known to his buddies as Georges Le Champignon, in one of his more intense moments of badassery. It being his birthday in a few days, I figured this would make a nice pre-”happy birthday”.

In other news, your dearly beloved blogger will be attending Nijikon this weekend, which is the local Japanese culture/manga/anime/fantasy convention. Sadly, I doubt I’ll be donning any radioactive hair colors this year, but unlike last year, I’ll be doing more than just dropping by over there, so I should at least bring back some photo goodies for this place. Or… you know… get drunk on sake and not remember a thing. Cherry-oh!

I had decided to establish Monday as blog update day, but my inclination towards procrastination had its way with me again. The damn thing joined forces with my recent vegetative state and lo and behold… mutiny on the Bounty! And since my bike is out of commission until I can find a socket wrench of the proper gauge to put back the damn pedal that came off (I’ll give you a minute to laugh it out), I’ve been a glorified couch potato lately. I never thought I’d be saying this, but I almost can’t wait for school to start again…

Either way, seeing as I finally mustered the focus to actually be here and knowing myself to have the attention span of a radish, I shall hasten to introduce the actual photo, before I see something shiny and forget all about it…

This was taken from the top of the fortress in Kotor, Montenegro, at dusk (despite the title, regarding which you may protest at will, any such protest to be subsequently taken carefully into consideration, then politely ignored).

Having taken my first exam as a grad student, I figured I’d take it easy this weekend… Chill out with a hot cup of tea, a good book, a live stream of Cartoon Network, you know, the little pleasures in life. Of course, then it all went to hell when it occurred to me that project I kept postponing is due on Monday. As a lovely webcomic once stated – “We’re not normal people. We’re grad students” (or something along those lines). Oh well… I’ll at least leave *you* people with the Zen…

This was taken at Balea Lac (Lake Balea) in the Fagaras Mountains. After all of my parents’ backpacking stories involving it, I was actually quite excited to finally see it.

I’d like to start a short series of photos I took during my last hiking trip, up to the Malaiesti cabin, in the Bucegi mountains. The track itself was a tad too tricky to stop for photos, not to mention the fact that I obviously didn’t have my tripod with me for those long exposure night shots. Oops… I didn’t mention we left Busteni at 10 p.m. and got there at 5:30 a.m., did I? Good thing my parents don’t read this…

However, once we got there, I was fortunate enough to get this glorious picture perfect weather that morning (after a couple of hours of sleep, that is), so I figured I’d share what I have to show for it.

I must be. How often can you hear a normal, decent person say they single-handedly reduced to silence a highly frequented forum thread of one hundred and forty-six pages, with one post? I should take note and refrain from having my critique requests unleash further death and destruction upon the world.

Then again, at times, I briefly think to myself that maybe my photos were so inspiring, that everyone was too much in awe basking in their glow, to actually reply. Because I’m confident, like that.

No matter, the show must go on. (I feel I’ve said that somewhere before. Either that, or I’m suffering from deja-vu syndrome, which sounds so glamorous, I couldn’t help but see a silver lining in it all.)

Fearful as I may be of the consequences, I dare present to you my latest weapon of mass forum destruction…

As you may suspect, this was also taken sometime this summer, and I hate my then self with a vengeance for being in a warm sunny place, with glorious mountains to gaze upon and not a care in the world. I also hate my future self for being not just cold, but at the very least snowed upon.

However, it has come to my attention that I am beginning to make less and less sense, which can only be a clear indication of the fact that I am now too sleepy to be coherent. I shall now bid you good night, before I start quoting limericks in a shakespearean tongue.
